Addict

Sadly, I am....an addict that is.

Now on the scale of things to which people are addicted, I think I'm pretty lucky. You can rule out alcohol and nicotine. No illegal drugs, or prescription ones, for that matter. But I've got two little things on my list of addictions.

My first addiction - Books. My appetite for books is voracious. And that’s the problem. I spend so much time reading, that it cuts into the time I should be doing other stuff. I can’t help it. And that’s what makes it an addiction. I am almost never without a book in progress. I like escaping into other people’s words, other people’s worlds. And that leads me to my other addiction. The one without any redeeming qualities.

I love watching television. In a big way. I like to say that my PVR is like my Adam. He knows what I like and he goes out and gets it for me. And I've got fairly eclectic taste in shows, just like my eclectic taste in books and music. I like sitcoms, dramas, reality shows, unscripted reality shows, things that are not targeted to my demographic, etc, etc. Some of my current PVR season passes include: Falling Skies, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (yes, I know...but I can't help myself. Especially after Mama June declared "I'm not wop-sided, I'm beautimus"), Continuum, Mr's Brown Boys, The Walking Dead, and the list goes on. See what I mean about having a problem? I can’t help it. I love disappearing into alternate realities. Even when, or perhaps especially when, I know they aren't realities at all. A good story takes me away. I love being transported by good acting and great writing. And woe to thee who can’t provide. I'm looking at you, Falling Skies. rock last season, don’tcha think?

Anyway, I just wanted to make this confession. To you. To myself. I need to seek therapy to break away from the idiot box. But you know what? It makes me happy. And I've gotten better in my old age at turning off a show that doesn't make me laugh or cry or feel whatever it is it is seeking to make me feel. And I'm getting better at putting down books that just aren't worth my time. Only recently have I learned to abandon books that don’t grab me, the ones that I previously used to slog through to the end just because I felt like I had to. Time is more precious these days. I'm glad I'm starting to realize that.

Wow! Is that the time? Sorry, gotta run. I think there's someone dancing on TV tonight and I can’t miss that…

What about you...what do you like to watch on TV?

  1. Honey Boo Boo is one of those shows you just can't stop yourself from watching! I think my only saving grace on not having a ton of books is that it's all on my kindle. I too like getting into a story and feeling like I am in it :) For some reason it hasn't been as bad lately but I'm sure I'll pick up the reading again soon.
